Netherlands Pavilion to Begin Its “Second Life” on Awaji Island

On 20 May 2025 at Expo 2025 Osaka, the consortium AND BV announced that the Netherlands Pavilion will be given a second life following the Expo. A basic agreement was signed between AND BV and the Pasona Group, a Japanese multinational company, for the purchase and relocation of the pavilion to Awaji Island.

The Netherlands Pavilion has been designed and built by the Dutch-Japanese consortium AND BV, which includes RAU Architects, engineering consultancy DGMR, design studio Tellart, and Japanese construction company Asanuma Corporation. From the very beginning, the pavilion was conceived as a fully demountable and reusable structure, designed to demonstrate the principles of the circular economy. Every element was selected for its durability, traceability, and potential for future use.

Rather than being dismantled and discarded after the Expo, the pavilion will be rebuilt as part of Pasona’s new sustainable project on Awaji Island. This move extends the building’s lifespan and preserves the spirit of Common Ground—the theme of the Netherlands Pavilion—well beyond the Expo.

Pasona Group, founded in 1976, is a leading Japanese company focused on employment and human resource services. In recent years, it has also become a pioneer in regional revitalisation and sustainable development. Its activities on Awaji Island include initiatives in agriculture, education, tourism, and community building—making it an ideal partner to carry forward the pavilion’s legacy of innovation and sustainability.

“Material resources in architecture should never end as waste,” says Thomas Rau of RAU Architects, “the Netherlands Pavilion is living proof that buildings can be designed from the outset to be material banks, fully remountable, and reusable for another purpose.”

The basic agreement with Pasona marks a unique and lasting legacy for the Dutch contribution to Expo 2025: not merely an exhibition, but a living example of regenerative design. One that will continue to inspire, in a new place, with a renewed purpose.
