The relationship between Japan and the Netherlands began in 1600 with the arrival of the Dutch ship De Liefde in Kyushu. This partnership led to the establishment of Rangaku learning centers, enabling knowledge exchange and aiding Japan's modernization. For nearly 240 years, the Netherlands was Japan's sole European trading partner. Today, this relationship thrives, with Japan being a key trade, innovation, and cultural partner. Both nations share values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law. The Netherlands appreciates Japan’s cultural heritage, while Japan values the Dutch innovative approach to societal challenges like aging, urbanisation, sustainability, and social inclusion.

A New Dawn on Common Ground Exhibition at Osaka Castle
From May 9th to May 29th 2025, the Netherlands Consulate General in Osaka presents an exhibition on the early relationship between Japan and the Netherlands. Starting with the arrival of De Liefde in 1600, we present artifacts from the presence of the Dutch in Japan until the mid-nineteenth century. Highlights include the original wooden bust of Erasmus (on loan from the Tokyo National Museum), once attached to the ship that washed ashore in Usuki, Oita prefecture, as well as original objects from the Dutch factory in Hirado, and original books and objects from Dejima, Nagasaki. In the official catalogue for the exhibition (download available below), you can have a sneak peek at what is shown on location. The exhibition is accessible to anyone who buys a ticket to Osaka Castle. Tickets and more information on the Osaka Castle official website.
Common Ground: The Beginnings of Japanese-Dutch Exchange Manga
For this occasion, we worked with the International Research Center for Japanese Studies in Kyoto to create a special manga that celebrates this history. We hope it helps Japanese children and teenagers understand and engage with the story of Japan and the Netherlands as they wander through the exhibition. This manga was written by Frederik Cryns and illustrated by Asano Miura. A download will be added to this website as soon as it is available.
