Re-thinking, Re-use offers an alternative approach to architecture and heritage, focusing on the reuse of existing buildings as an alternative to demolition or conservative preservation. This approach creates a bridge between the present, future, and past.
Japanese building culture has long been shaped by a tradition of demolition and reconstruction, born from historical catastrophes such as earthquakes and fires, and characterised by a focus on anticipating the future. In contrast, Dutch building culture tends to build upon the past, looking backward for inspiration when seeking solutions for the future. By comparing these different perspectives on the old, the new and the changing, a third approach emerges – one that begins in the present, viewing a building not as a definitive end point or exclamation mark, but rather as a comma: a pause between transformations.
In collaboration with Dutch and Japanese partners, HOH Architecten has conducted in-depth research, including a series of workshops, mental mapping exercises and public lectures at different locations in Japan (Tokyo, Sapporo and Kurashiki) and the Netherlands. An outcome of this research is a dialogue between the two cultures, examining what we value and how those values are reflected in our built environment. Because what we value is what we care for, preserve, reuse and pass on to future generations. How do we value change, time, materials, space, design and craft? How do social and financial values interrelate? And how does the built environment influence the lived experience of it, and vice versa?
This intercultural dialogue on the built environment is documented in a publication that will be presented at an upcoming symposium at the World Expo.
